Michael Mapes
Specimen No. AM200716”w x 14” h x 3” dPhotographic prints, misc collage materials, insect pins, pinning foam, glass vials, magnifiers, gelatin capsules, resin filled plastic containers, within wood box with glass cover.
New York artist Michael Mapes is a collector. Well, maybe not your typical one. His art is inspired by scientific specimen collections. His photographs themselves question the logic behind the organization of each piece. By dissecting and then compartmentalizing individual fragments within plastic bags, glass vials, magnifiers, and on insect pins, he has created a “biographical DNA” in the form of such things as hair, finger nails, scent, eye lashes, fingerprints, food, botanical elements, fabric swatches, makeup, dirt, handwriting samples and breath. This creative process creates an uncanny area between photography and sculpture.

PHOTOS: Students Protest In Chile

Students throw stones and sticks at the riot police and set cars on fire during a protest against the government of President Sebastian Pinera and calling for education reforms, in Santiago, on August 9, 2011.

Students in Chile want the national government to take over the public school system, where 90 percent of the country’s 3.5 million students are educated. The students say the system is underfunded and deeply inequitable.

After seeing this we feel like we will never be able to complain about any beach we swim at again.  Not even Jones Beach.
Children swim along the algae-filled coastline of Qingdao, in eastern China’s Shandong province, July 17, 2011. Green algae continues to spread in waters off China’s east coastline and although not poisonous, it can hinder the fishing industry and tourism in affected areas. (STR/AFP/Getty Images )
