Dissident Artist Creates Giant Map of China From Baby Formula

A map of China made from more than 1,800 cans of baby formula created by dissident Chinese artist Ai Weiwei went on show in Hong Kong on Friday, reflecting the controversy over mainland demand for milk powder.

A surge in demand for formula in China sparked by fears over the safety of domestic milk powder has seen shop shelves around the world cleared out by Chinese buyers and unofficial exporters.

The Ai Weiwei exhibit entitled ‘Baby Formula 2013′ uses 1,815 full cans of seven brands of milk powder and covers a 10-meter by 8-meter floor space.

“The piece is related to several problems,” Ai Weiwei told AFP on Friday.

China’s Tomb-sweeping Festival (清明节)

For more photos from the Qingming Festival, check out the hashtags for #qingming, #清明节 and #清明.

104 days after the winter solstice, communities in China, Taiwan and parts of Southeast Asia observe Qingming Festival (清明节), a bittersweet holiday that commemorates deceased family members and celebrates the coming spring season.

People celebrate Qingming by paying visits to their ancestors’ grave sites where they sweep the tombs and bring offerings of food or burning joss paper. Picnics, outdoor strolls and kite-flying are also common on this day as people take in the emerging greenery of the season.

The festival was first officially observed in the Tang Dynasty under Emperor Xuanzhong in 732 CE, and has been a consistent part of Chinese art and culture ever since.

You’ve probably heard the song “On A Slow Boat To China.” Well, we’ve got a slow boat from China! The opening of our magnificent exhibit Xu Bing: Phoenix has been delayed due to storm-related shipping obstacles.

Happily, the boats carrying
the enormous phoenix sculptures have just cleared the Panama Canal. The exhibition will be publicly on view starting Saturday, December 22. We’d love for you to visit over the holidays.

Our opening reception for December 8 is cancelled, but we’re planning a reception on Saturday, April 27, at 5 PM when a second part of the show will open. This exhibit will be breathtaking. Don’t miss the boat!

‘Facekinis’ take China by storm
A parent and a child wear body suits and protective head masks — dubbed “facekinis” — on Aug. 16 while swimming at a public beach. Although a nice tan is desirable in many cultures, it’s not in China, where people regularly carry umbrellas — not to shield from the rain, but from the sunlight. In an agricultural society like China, tanned skin traditionally implies that one works outside all day in the fields, while lighter skin implies wealth and a higher social status. Initially designed to protect the wearer from sunburn, the unusual swimming mask is also effective at repelling jellyfish and insects.
