The Pigeon Homeing Project
Annie Dunning made paintings of 45 particular urban pigeons. The pigeon paintings start as a file of pigeons — people may “adopt” the pigeons, in which case she hand paints the pigeon at floor level in their home. The “file” for that pigeon is then stamped with the word “home.” She documents the pigeon within its new home.
The birds become part of the home, remaining there even if the owners of the home move away. This reflects how homing pigeons are loyal to their roosting spot, not to any particular owner.
There is something about home and homelessness in this, I think.
