Today I bought three books by the classic French illustrator Tomi Ungerer. Otto (1999) tackles the holocaust through the eyes of a bear named Otto, whose owner David must start wearing a star on his coat and eventually gets sent, along with his parents, to “a terrible prison.” Heartbreaking, let me tell you. Adelaide (1959) tells the story of a flying kangaroo who travels the world, and explores the importance of being an individual. Moon Man (1966) is a wonderfully-illustrated tale of a man who lives inside the moon and who longs to experience life on earth. Things don’t turn out how he expects, though.
My mom read Moon Man to me when I was little. I think it greatly affected my political and artistic sensibilities later...
